MUNICIPALITY OF LAS NIEVES

In April 1877, Father Urios reported to the Jesuit Superior to Manila his successful founding of five villages along the Agusan River, the villages were Las Nieves, Remedios, Esperanza, to Guadalope and San Luis.

It was Las Nieves that he founded first. Upon their first day of stay in this unknown village, they were so amazed one early morning when they woke up. It was foggy that day it was raining with snow just like their hometown at Valencia, Spain. They were overjoyed that they shouted in Spanish saying; La Nieve! La Nieve! which means in English, The Snow! The Snow!.Out of great significance, he gave the name Las Nieves from "Nuestra Seņora de Las Nieves", the patroness of his hometown who just emerged from the mountains of snow.

In 1940, Las Nieves was constituted as a municipal district under the municipality of Esperanza.
Las Nieves was created into a municipality on June 25, 1963.
